Yorkshire Water Wins Major National Environmental Award

Yorkshire Water's commitment to environmental best practice was rewarded last night when it gained the Shields Award for environmental sustainability at Business in the Community's National Awards for Excellence held at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

In a glittering event, businesses from all over the UK received awards in a range of fields from cause related marketing to investment in education.Yorkshire Water's award was given for the work it has undertaken in a variety of environmental practices which included the way it works with its contract partners and how it trains its staff on key environmental issues.

Tony Harrington, head of environment, health and safety for Yorkshire Water, said: "This is excellent recognition for all of our staff.  Over 90 per cent of colleagues have undertaken environmental training which really has made a difference to the company.  They are always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment which is very encouraging.

"But it's clear that we also need to work very closely with all our contract partners and supplies so that we can achieve an even higher level of environmental sustainability."

All suppliers which work with Yorkshire Water have been assessed by the company's in-house Environmental Vendor Evaluation System, which also supported the company's successful drive to achieve ISO 14001 accreditation for every aspect of its business.

Gordon Shields, Chairman of Shields Environmental, said: "Yorkshire Water, in a relatively short space of time, has shown what commitment, dedication and enthusiasm from all levels of the business can really do for the environment.  Their approach is an excellent role model for others to follow."
