Yorkshire Water is among the best in the country for building environmental measures into its business operations, the findings of a study has revealed.
The company was ranked in the top band of businesses and organisations in the UK which took part in the national Business in the Environment survey, which targetted companies featured in the FTSE 100 and FTSE mid-250.
The aim of the report, The Third Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement - which is published today (Monday, June 21) - is to raise awareness about environmental issues, to enable organisations to rate themselves against ten key attributes of environmental management, and to initiate and encourage environmental competitiveness.
Dr Kevin Bond, Yorkshire Water's chief executive and chairman of the Regional Environmental Action Partnership, said: "Yorkshire Water takes the environment extremely seriously and we are, in fact, the region's biggest investor in it.
"Before we carry out any significant schemes we undertake detailed surveys to asses how much impact they will have on the environment. Even though we are delighted to have come in the top band in this index, we are not complacent and this is a platform for us to build on."
The index is based on self-assessment and is strongly systems-focused. It is intended to help organisations identify for themselves where the strengths and weaknesses are in their environmental management processes.
