08/03/1999
Yorkshire Water today welcomed the news that its proposed takeover of York Waterworks plc can proceed.
This follows the decision by the Secretary of State For Trade and Industry not to refer the proposed acquisition to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
Yorkshire Water's managing director Jonson Cox responded to today's news by reaffirming the company's commitment to further improve services in the York district and at the same time reduce customers' bills.
"This is a good deal for the customers, employees and shareholders of York Waterworks. It is a well run company and Yorkshire Water looks forward to building on its past achievements," said Mr Cox.
"I would also like to reiterate the commitment we have given to reduce customers' bills by April 2004," added Mr Cox.
As well as enjoying a future reduction in bills, customers of York Waterworks' will also be able to take advantage of other benefits including:
Greater access to Yorkshire Water's regional water supply system, now regarded as one of the most flexible and robust in the UK.
An enhanced free leakage repair scheme for domestic customers' supply pipes.
A free leakage audit service for businesses.
Existing customers of York Waterworks will not see any immediate changes to the services or literature they receive and should continue to contact the company through normal channels.
