Occupational Health, Wellbeing & Safety

Principles

The company is committed to achieving high health and safety standards throughout its businesses. The management of health and safety issues operates in the context of the health and safety policy adopted by the Board and the system of internal control.

Senior management awareness and active involvement in health and safety is fundamental to company success. Where possible, the intent is for local health and safety issues to be discussed and resolved with line management.  In Yorkshire Water there are 42 appointed Health and Safety Champions who work alongside the Trade Union Safety Representatives and line management.  This ensures that health and safety issues are regularly discussed within each team in the Water and Waste business units.

By the nature of accidents, there can be no guarantee that they will never occur. However, the measures taken by the company are intended to place emphasis on prevention and continuing vigilance.

YW is also committed to a programme of raising health and safety awareness amongst line managers.

Occupational health promotions have included measuring blood pressure, body stats clinics to identify weight issues and lunchtime relaxation classes.

A new system has been launched to manage the risk from lone workers.  The system allows the lone worker to record a voice message and set a time after which if they do not sign off the alarm is raised.  This system can be used by all colleagues whether they work on YW sites, in the highway or on others premises.

A new E-Learning system has also been launched to train colleagues in the safe use of computers and record individual workstation assessments.  This system has been successfully launched in the IT Directorate and will be rolled out to the whole of YW during 2005.

The Health and Safety Manager has been appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Water UK Occupational Health and Safety Group and remains committed to the Water Ahead programme.  Yorkshire Water has developed a Water UK Occasional Guidance Note on the risk assessment for Pipe Crossings and Pipe Bridges.  We are also heading up the Guidance Note on Work at Height which should be accepted as the industry standard by the end of 2005.

Awards

Yorkshire Water Services has been awarded a National Safety Award from the British Safety Council and a Gold Award for Occupational Safety from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for their health and safety performance during 2004-05.
