Yorkshire Water’s leakage reduction programme is helping to
tackle the problems caused by the vast and ageing system of water
mains we inherited. Since 1995 we’ve successfully reduced
leakage by 44.8%. These levels are considerably better than targets
set by OFWAT.
Our success at reducing leakage has been achieved through a focused
asset management and operation strategy which relies on a
combination of proactive leakage detection, Distribution Management
Area design and network optimisation and operation. We have a
policy of repairing leaks, free of charge, on privately owned
supply pipes serving wholly domestic dwellings, residential homes
and places of worship. In addition, Yorkshire Water is involved in
the development of leakage detection techniques, both in the UK and
with our sister company Aquarion in America.
We’ll continue to reduce the levels of leakage by increased
efforts on leakage detection and repair and by capital investment
in the water mains network. We’ve introduced a free leakage
repair service for domestic customers' supply pipes and also a free
leakage detection service for business. We’ve also introduced
a Freephone Leakline number 0800 573553 for customers to report
leaks.
